There Are Even More Rare Elements Bills About

On Thursday afternoon (2:30 p.m. Eastern) the Energy Subcommittee of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing on critical minerals and materials legislation.  Besides Senator Murkowski’s bill, two other Senate bills will be the subject of the hearing.

S. 383, sponsored by Senator Mark Udall of Colorado, is a more high-level bill than Senator Murkowski’s S. 1113, giving more general directions and providing statements of policy.  It also focuses more on research and development into critical minerals and materials and the associated supply chains.  Since we are dealing with the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, the Department of Interior and the Department of the Interior get most of the responsibilities doled out in this legislation.

The other bill on the hearing agenda is S. 421, sponsored by Senator Hagan of North Carolina.  Her bill focuses on lithium production, specifically for use in batteries.

The witnesses scheduled to appear at the hearing are government officials from the State of Nevada, the Energy and Interior Departments, and private sector witnesses.
