The Daily Show Mixes Child Development and “Free” Online Games

Posted by David Bruggeman on January 1, 2012

I’m starting 2012 (Happy New Year!) with one of my common leisure activities – catching up with The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.  The latest segment worth noting comes from the December 8th edition of The Daily Show, where Aasif Mandi examines how kids sometimes pay lots of their parents’ money for “free” games.  The segment includes sound bites from a child psychologist about why kinds might be more inclined to fall for the in-game purchases in these free games.

The segment focuses on one particular game, Tapfish, and apparently the game company CEO felt a need to respond and explain several points that were not aired on the segment.  Perhaps the one unaired item most worth noting is that the money was indeed refunded.  As a side note, the father’s lack of parental monitoring and credit card number security could have gotten a bit more attention – certainly there was room for laughter there.
