Get Your STEM Game On: Video Game Challenge Now Open

The White House announced that the next edition of the STEM Video Game Challenge is now open.  The first edition attracted over 600 entries, and several of the winners will have their games commercially published.  Entries must be submitted by March 12, 2012.

While I can hear the lips sneering at the notion of educational games, research has suggested that playing such games, and perhaps more importantly, creating them, can help students learn content and Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics skills.  Programmers can compete in a few different platforms, create a game from scratch or on an open platform.  And while the older competitors are more likely to contribute through the games they make, the student developers have the added benefit of learning more along the way.  And the prize money sure helps.

Here’s some more on the youth division winners from the last run of the competition.
