Watch The State of the Union Address Online for Enhanced Experience

Posted by David Bruggeman on January 25, 2011

I don’t watch State of the Union addresses, or most political speeches, mainly to avoid the inane chattering before and after that passes for analysis.  So my bar is low about setting expectations.  The last time I saw anything novel about how these addresses were presented, Dennis Miller was still a working comic and offering live commentary during them on Comedy Central.

But tonight, if you decide to watch the speech online at the White House website, you can have an enhanced viewing experience.  By this the White House means as various points in the address come up, relevant visual aids will be presented online.  I like the idea, but I’m sufficiently skeptical of the value of these addresses to think that the selected visual aids will do much to really discuss the ‘state of the union.’  I suppose I’m being too much of a literalist here, but I’ve never seen the introduction of major legislative and other government programs to be completely fulfilling the responsibility as described in the Constitution (Article II, Section 3)

“[The President] shall from time to time give to the Congress Information on the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient;”

It would be nice to see a multimedia presentation that was actually on the state of the union, but I’ll take a multimedia presentation on what the President wants to do during the next year.
